The fountain was made by J.L. Mott Ironworks in 1849. More information about Square Saint Louis (also known as carré Saint-Louis) is here, here and here.

That’s my favorite fountain in Montreal. I spent a lot of time around that thing in the late 80s and early 90s when I had a lot more spare time on my hands. I wrote a story about it on my blog in 2006:

One of my favorite fountains in Montreal is La Joute in the old port. What fountain can really top one that gets lit on fire every hour? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Joute

Thanks, and I agree that la Joute is a kick-ass fountain. Unfortunately it gets busted far too frequently.
